Educational Animation

Students hand in their storyboards for the educational animation

The Disney Years

Continue your Powerpoint on Animation Development with Part 2 ‘The Disney Years’

Otto Messmer ‘Felix the Cat’ 1926 Worldwide fame
Bray studios were coming to an end in 1930
His animators spread their wings
Max Fleisher the inventor of Rotoscoping (drawing over film) and later to make Superman made KoKo the Clown.
When sound came in KoKo was replaced by Betty Boop
Another Bray Studios animator Walter Lantz (Dinky Doodle) joined Walt Disney in Hollywood

Walt Disney had joined with a talented animator Ubbe Iwerks to found a small company and made Laugh O’Grams form Frank Newman an owner of movie theatres in Kansas.
When his fledgling company went bust Walt Disney left Kansas and joined his brother Roy Disney in Hollywood in 1923.
In 1927 they got a contract with Margaret Winkler for their Alice series. They formed the Disney Brothers Company and employed Iwerks and Harman.Their first cartoon was Oscar (originally Oswald the Rabbit.
Disney launched his most famous character Mickey Mouse in ‘Plane Crazy’ and ‘Gallopin Gaucho’.
In 1928 they embraced sound (Talkie pictures were just coming in with Al Jolson’s The Jazz Singer)with Mickey Mouse in ‘Steamboat Willie’.
Walt Disney trademarked his most famous creation – soon there would be others including Pluto, Goofy and Donald Duck.

In the 1930s Walt Disney went into huge debt to produce the first animated feature film ‘Snow White’. He spent 2 million dollars and it took three years, premiering in 1937.
It made eight and a half million dollars an immense amount in those days.
